Emerging technologies such as AI and cryptocurrencies, while beneficial to water management, have huge water footprints due to high energy consumption and cooling requirements. Calculating these footprints is difficult, incorporating on-site cooling, electrical generation, and manufacturing. Studies show significant water use, emphasising the importance of accurate reporting and efficient design to reduce environmental effect. Optimising algorithms and developing better cooling alternatives are critical for balancing technology gains with resource conservation.
