WhatsApp chat backup on Android will soon cost you money

WhatsApp has updated its terms of service for Android users, announcing that chat backups on Google Drive will no longer be free and will consume Google account storage. This change, already applied to WhatsApp beta users, will be extended to regular users in the coming months. While not new for iOS users, who already face storage limitations on iCloud, Android users may need to consider a Google One subscription for chat and media file backups. With Google providing 15 GB of shared free storage, users can continue free backups if sufficient space is available or opt for a Google One subscription, starting at Rs 130 per month, offering 100 GB of storage and additional features. It's a notable move following Google's termination of free unlimited storage on Google Photos. Users can manage backups by deleting unwanted content or choosing to back up text-only messages, and alternative methods for transferring chats between phones exist, catering to frequent device switchers.
