WhatsApp is testing a way for users to connect third-party AI agents and talk to them inside the app. The feature appears in the Android beta version 2.26.35.3 and is rolling out to a small number of users in selected regions. People open an Agents section in settings, add an agent by name and profile, then enter an API key on the agent’s platform to finish the link. Up to five agents can be connected at once. Each agent shows up as its own separate conversation. Messages sent to these agents are not end-to-end encrypted. They pass through a Meta service that handles the chat for the agent developer. The agents themselves stay limited. They can only see the single chat they are in and cannot reach other conversations, contacts or media. They also cannot join groups or communities. Users can remove an agent at any time, which breaks the connection while leaving the old chat visible.
