Wireless cellular service to be made available to all Toronto subway riders from October

The Canadian government now requires mobile carriers to provide Toronto subway riders with cellular connectivity by Oct. 3. Minister Champagne requires Toronto carriers to provide full mobile coverage in the subway. According to Champagne, carriers who fail to meet these conditions may face monetary penalties, suspension, or revocation of their spectrum license. The need for more reliable cellular connectivity throughout the Toronto transit system has been a significant rider issue. This has made it difficult to access emergency services while commuting on public transit, leading to frustration for passengers. Currently, Rogers Communications (RCIb.TO) and Freedom Mobile are the only carriers that provide wireless service in the subway system. Champagne emphasized that cellular connectivity on the subway is not just about convenience but also a crucial public safety issue.
